Social Networking - An Addiction

Cyberworld & You - Part 1
Social Networking - An Addiction

FACEBOOK
MYSPACE
ORKUT
TWITEER
HI5
FRIENDSTER
BABO
...and so many so called social networking websites.
Few definitions, to start with:
  • Cybercad: One seeing cyber screen continuously.
  • Screenager: Teenager occupied with computer screen.
  • Twit: Following somebody on Twitter.
  • Twiteria (like Diarrhea): Tweeting all the while on multiple subjects without purpose and/or need.
  • Texting: Sending text messages (SMSes)off and on.
  • Sexting: Busy sending messages related to sex.
Internet users of social networks are having a habit formed of living with its company. In fact they are online all the time, may be more than 7-8 hours a day as an addiction.

They can not live without being in touch with connectivity of social networking of their choice.

To describe them, I must say they update their profiles/sites frequently. For examples, they will check it on entering home from outside, while eating, even while sex act, so much so, they get up in the morning and check before washing their face or going to bathroom. If they get up at night accidentally, they will start that computer soon.

The people on job, spend more than an hour a day during their work time on surfing and avoid their work.

No doubt, there are benefits of social networking. Here you can express freely and unhesitantly. You can make friend only by few clicks. You feel accompanied while you are alone.

The disadvantages are no less, if not understood its limitations. One should not forget it is an imaginary world with limited reality behind.

Conclusions and comments:
  • Computer, TV, mobile and such other modern-day-gadgets have very useful and important role in today's life. They keep you in touch with the world and updated till last moment. At the same time, they can be harmful to the extent can be fatal. Their judicious and prudent utilization is must.
  • Let us not make social networking our total life, keep it limited as a little part of life.
  • Limit and fix 15-30 or 45 minutes a day a final time limit for social networking.
  • Have Net-free and TV-free vacations.
  • Make friends in real life, love them the most. Invite them for party (may be Tea, Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner). Wander with them in the town, places around or wherever possible.
  • Enjoy company of GOD given relatives – the parents, brother-sister and all others. There is no alternate to that.

  1. I like the article and agree to it, but then people i like me and even rahul who have 50% or rather for me 90% friends abroad this is the best way to stay in touch; also the addiction is coz somtime you are all by urself and ur work demands u to be in front of system for more then 18hrs a day and it becomes like a routine and habit to come around on such websites !!!

  2. I agree... the right balance is what is required. if u r socially very active in real life, it is understandable if u use FB/twitter etc a lot. But if a loner in real life is tweeting or adding photos or updating status msg or adding new friends etc etc almost everyday, it is a sign of addiction/imbalance.
