સીમંત - સીમંતોન્નયન સંસ્કાર

હિન્દુઓમાં લગ્ન પછી મા-બાપ થવાની પહેલી વારની અવસ્થાનું ખૂબ મહત્વ છે. ગર્ભમાં રહેલ બાળકને શુદ્ધ કરવું – પવિત્ર કરવું જરૂરી હોવાથી તે બાબતનું સંસ્કરણ કરવામાં આવે છે. તેથી જીવન દરમ્યાન થતાં સોળ સંસ્કારોમાંથી એક સીમંતોન્નયન સંસ્કાર ખૂબ જરૂરી છે. આ વિધિ ગર્ભાવસ્થાના અંતિમ તબક્કામાં છઠ્ઠા કે આઠમા માહિનામાં કરવામાં આવે છે. બાળક જન્મ પહેલાના સમયગાળામાં માતાની મન:સ્થિતિની સીધી અસર બાળક ઉપર પડે છે – એટલે આનંદોત્સવ મનાવવાથી સ્ત્રીનું મન આ સમય દરમ્યાન પ્રસન્ન રહે છે જેથી બાળક પણ તંદુરસ્ત રહે છે. ઘરમાં બાળક આવવાના સમાચાર માત્રથી સમગ્ર પરિવારમાં ઉત્સાહ અને આનંદનું વાતાવરણ હોય છે અને સૌ આતુરતાથી આવનાર બાળક મહેમાનના આગમનની રાહ જોતાં હોઈ છે. સીમંત વિધિ (ખોળો ભરવો – गोद भराई – Baby Shower) શબ્દસહ સમજીએ તો સીમંત એટલે વાળ અને ઉન્નયન એટલે ઉપર ચઢાવવા. વિધિની શરૂઆતમાં પતિ મંત્ર બોલી પત્નીના વાળ સજાવે છે અને સેંથામાં સિંદુર પૂરે છે. સંસ્કૃત મંત્ર દ્વારા કહે છે : “દેવતાઓની માતા અદિતીના સીમંતોન્નયન સંસ્કાર પ્રજાપતિઓને કર્યા હતા અને અદિતીના પેટે દેવતાઓ જન્મ્યા હતા એમ હું સીમંતોન્નયન શ્રેષ્ઠ અન...

Anavils - An Endangered Community

After Parsis, Anavils ( Anavil Brahmins , અનાવિલ બ્રાહ્મણ ) are the fastest decreasing community. The total population of Anavils around the world does not exceed two lakhs figure and that is also fast reducing day by day. Days are not far, beyond a century or so, when they will have to be seen/found in records, photos, and videos. Why? Because, - they get married too late, - many are dying unmarried, - they wait for the career to be settled before the first (and maybe the only) childbirth. History Of Muslims In India: Hindu-Muslim Relations

With this article, I would like to tell you about three things: (1) the History of Islam and Muslims in India; then I will try to elaborate, specifically telling (2) What went wrong; and finally, I will conclude by telling (3) The future of relations amongst Muslims and Hindus. માતૃભાષા - વિશ્વ માતૃભાષા દિવસે...

Void After My Father's Departure

One year back, I was writing about myself in an article Death at 60 . I wrote there I was ready to die at any time, but given a choice, I would like to wait until my father was alive. My purpose for this demand of concession was my desire to support my father morally and physically in his old age. Well, he did not agree to this and went away forever on his own. So, I can loudly pronounce now “I am ready to die!” However, I have yet to learn how to react to someone when I disagree with them and/or my ideas differ in total from the concerned person. At present, in such situations, I keep myself away and withdraw. It can be labeled as escapism . But coming to a consensus or agreement is not always easy. Due to the generation gap or the conservative approach of parents, the difference of opinion is bound to be there. Here, both parties should take care of maintaining the dignity of the other. The ideal option is to ignore the nature of the parents and forgive them immediately.

અંગદનો પગ - પુસ્તક પરિચય

એક જ બેઠકમાં કે પછી સળંગ વાંચવાની ઉત્કંઠા જાગે એવી આ નવલકથાનો પરિચય કરાવવાનો નમ્ર પ્રયાસ કરતાં ખૂબ આનંદ થાય છે. ભુજ રહેતા, હાલ 74 વર્ષીય, આપણાં લેખક શ્રી હરેશ ધોળકિયા જિંદગીના 25 વર્ષ શિક્ષણકાર્ય કરતાં હતા. અને આદર્શ શિક્ષકના એક લક્ષણ તરીકે પુસ્તકો વાંચવાની સરસ ટેવ ધરાવતા હતા. તે કારણે 1945 માં લખાયેલ 1930 ની કથાવસ્તુ ધરાવતી લેખિકા ઈયાન હેન્ડ દ્વારા લિખિત બે નવલકથાઓ વાંચે છે - 700+ પાનાંની Fountain Head (ફાઉન્ટન હેડ) સાત-સાત વાર સળંગ વાંચી તો 1150+ પાનાં ધરાવતી Atlas Shrugged (એટલાસ શ્રગ્ડ) પણ સળંગ અવારનવાર વાંચી. 1988ના વર્ષે થયેલ આ અકસ્માત(!) આપણી નવલકથાનું જન્મસ્થાન છે. ફાઉન્ટન હેડ અને એટલાસ શ્રગ્ડ નવલકથાઓ રશિયન લેખિકા ઈયાન હેન્ડે અમેરિકા જઈને લખી છે અને બન્નેની 64 લાખ થી વધુ નકલો વિશ્વભરમાં વંચાય ચૂકી છે. બન્ને માં લેખકને “માનવ શ્રેષ્ઠત્વ” ના અદ્દભૂત દર્શન થયા છે. આ ઉપરાંત પ્રતિભાશાળી અને સામાન્ય (First Raters and Second Raters)નું તેમાં થયેલાં વર્ણન તેમણે આત્મશાત કર્યું છે. પહેલા લેખકશ્રીના મિત્ર શ્રી સુરેશભાઈ પરીખે એટલાસ શ્રગ્ડનું ભાષાંતર કરવા સૂચવ્યું. ત્યાર પછી...

સૌરાષ્ટ્ર એટલે વીરો અને સંતોની ભૂમિ, તેનું નાગરીરત્ન જુનાગઢનિવાસી ગૃહસ્થ ગિરનારની ઊંચાઈના કવિ અને ભક્ત તે નરસિંહ મહેતા! મીરા, કબીર કે તુલસીદાસ જેવો ભક્તકવિ પરમ સંત અને ગુજરાતી સાહિત્યનો મહાન સક્ષમ કવિ તે આપણો નરસૈયો . સાદાઈ, સરળતા, બેફિકરપણું જેવા ગુણો સાથે નાગરોની ટીકાને અવગણી હરિજનો વચ્ચે બેસી ભજનો કરતા અને ભોજન કરતા નરસિંહ મહેતા અસ્પૃશ્યતા આભડછેડના પાંચ શતક પહેલાંના સમાજમાં કલ્પવું મુશ્કેલ છે. હરિજન ઉદ્ધાર કે એવી કોઈ મોટાઈ વગર ઉચ્ચનીચના વાડા ભેદી હળવું મળવું જેવું ખૂબ હિંમત નું કામ તેઓ જ કરી શકે સંપૂર્ણ શરણાગતિ (Total Surrender) કે પછી સાક્ષીભાવ (Be Witness) જેવા ગીતાના ઉપદેશો આત્મસાત કરેલા આપણા મહાન કૃષ્ણભક્ત નરસિંહ મહેતાને માટે પ્રશંશાના શબ્દો મળતા નથી. કૃષ્ણ ભક્તિ-ભજન અને સંસારની સાંસારીક બાબતોમાં સંપૂર્ણ નચિંતપાણુંસમજવું સહેલું નથી. પુત્ર શામળશાનો વિવાહ, દીકરી કુંવરબાઈનું મામેરુ, હૂંડી લખી સ્વીકારનીઆશા રાખવી, પુત્ર શામળશા અને પત્ની માણેકબાઈના મૃત્યુ સમયે વિરક્તભાવનાથી “ભલું થયું ભાંગી જંજાળ” ગાતા નરસિંહ મહેતા કલ્પવા અને સમજવા આપણે પણ ખૂબ ઊંચી માનસિક સ્થિતિએ પહોંચવું પડે. આપણી સૌ...
